When a dog has soft stools week after week, passes wind that clears the room, scratches at its ears and licks its paws raw, owners often reach the same conclusion: it must be allergic to something in its food. It is a reasonable guess, and sometimes it is right. More often, though, the problem is a food intolerance rather than a true allergy, and the distinction matters, because the two are diagnosed and managed differently and the wrong approach can waste months and a great deal of money on special diets that were never going to help.
